This weekend, I took a break from my digital world. It just felt right to have a digital disconnect for a weekend and see how I would do. Saturday morning, I did some work for L2C and then shut my laptop to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Milwaukee had fabulous weather and I couldn’t miss out! I took a 3.5 mile walk around the neighborhood before doing some yardwork for the rest of the afternoon and early evening. Sunday was a Happy Mothers Day text to my mom, and brunch with family followed by errands. I finished a book and returned it to the library and made a nice dinner from scratch. It felt good to not be tethered to my phone and computer. The TV is on in the background, but just for the noise.
It’s times like those that remind me how important disconnection from the digital world eally is. The ever-developing world of AI is only going to keep tempting us to keep using our devices (after all, they depend on selling our data!). As an “elder millennial”, I am lucky to have a major portion of my childhood without computers and phones (although I loved the Snake game on my parents’ Nokia!). It’s sad to think my generation is the last to grow up without a phone that runs our life. This morning, I woke up to dozens of unread emails, but at least my brain got to disconnect for a few days. I feel refreshed and ready to mentally tackle the info overload.
That’s why I thought having a digital detox retreat is a fantastic idea. I chose Scotland as the perfect spot for 2027. Many pieces still need to fall into place, but I am very excited for this one! Scotland has a stunning backdrop of scenery and friendly people. It’s a pretty easy destination to get to as a direct flight from any major US city. I think this will be a great way to disconnect from our phones for a few days (although I know retreat guests will want to take photos!). We’ll set the intent to disconnect from media and reconnect with people. To prepare: try a digitial disconnect for a weekend. See how you can also handle it and break the habit of holding your phone.
